UK travel insurance

staying closer to home and enjoying a holiday in the UK has never been more popular. from city breaks and long weekends away in log cabins, to renting out Airbnb’s closer to the sea, staycations are a popular choice for many UK holidaymakers.

finding a good holiday deal is almost as important as protecting your trip with suitable travel insurance. and yes, you certainly do need suitable travel insurance in place, even if you’re only staying in the UK.

what’s more, most policies available here at albert & eddie also cover domestic breaks too, which means if you often enjoy a weekend away in the UK, you’ll also have protection for that trip too (provided you’re staying away from home for more than two nights and have paid for accommodation).

you must have booked and paid for 2 night’s accommodation for UK cover to apply. not all sections of cover apply if your trip is solely within the UK, the following sections of cover are available:

trip disruption

  • cancelling your trip.
  • cutting short your trip (excluding COVID-19 upgrade).

medical cover

  • medical repatriation, excluding medical expenses.
  • additional travel and accommodation costs.
  • hospital benefit.
  • repatriation of remains.

personal belongings

  • personal baggage.
  • money and travel documents.

what do UK or staycation travel insurance policies offer?

many people think that travel insurance is only needed if you are going overseas for a holiday, after all we have the NHS for any emergency medical treatment, right? but what some people forget is things like baggage, personal possessions and the cost of the trip (if you can no longer go) aren’t protected without having suitable travel insurance in place.

UK or staycation travel insurance policies cover you for everything you’d expect to be covered for on a normal travel insurance policy, with a few tweaks. while the medical cover limit may be slightly lower (due to being able to access NHS treatment in an emergency), these types of policies will still offer cover for things like baggage and cancellation costs. that’s why, even if you’re not travelling too far from home, it’s important to have suitable cover for any UK break.

all standard UK travel insurance policies at albert & eddie include:

  • cancellation cover which starts as soon as you purchase on all single trip policies, and from the start date you choose on all annual multi trip policies (giving you extra peace of mind)§
  • additional travel and accommodation expenses if you cannot come home as planned due to a medical emergency
  • 24/7 access to an assistance team in the case of a medical emergency
  • over 100 sports and activities covered as standard
  • plus, a wide range of extra add-ons that let you personalise your policy even further

frequently asked questions

what do UK or staycation travel insurance policies typically cover?

many of the policies available through albert & eddie offer cover for UK holidays, whether that’s under a single trip policy or an annual multi trip policy. while the protection they offer may vary between our brands, it’s important to have cover in place for the below scenarios that could happen during a staycation.

cancellation – you may have splashed out more on accommodation costs as you aren’t flying abroad, or you may have pitch fees if you’ve decided to go camping. either way, covering the costs of your trip in case you have to cancel means you could be paid back in full if you are unable to make it due to
reasons included in your policy.

gadgets – as you’re staying closer to home, you may be able to bring a few more gadgets with you (phones, iPads, laptops, you get the picture). most policies that offer UK cover include standard gadget protection, up to a certain amount. it’s important to check that the gadgets you plan to take are
covered under the policy and do not exceed the gadget limit. if not, you can easily add a gadget extension to make sure they’re covered. either way, it’s better to be safe than sorry!

possessions – you may decide to take a few more outfits with you (including all of the matching accessories), as there are no baggage charges for UK breaks! but it’s important to make sure that you have enough cover in place to cover all of your possessions should they be lost, stolen or damaged.

sports and activities – fancy trying something new? many basic sports and activities are covered as standard under most UK travel insurance policies. but it’s important to check whether the sports you plan on getting involved in are covered under the policy as you may need a bit more cover, if the activity is
deemed as a bit more dangerous.

medical – the cost of your treatment will most likely be covered by the NHS if you fall ill during a UK break, but what happens to the rest of your travelling party? most UK policies will cover the accommodation costs for someone to stay with you, as well as the cost of someone taking you back to
your home address if you are no longer able to drive yourself.

does UK travel insurance cover emergency medical assistance costs?

travel insurance policies are not the same as private health insurance policies. so, while most of the policies available through albert & eddie will come with some medical protection, this cover will be to help get you home if you fall ill during your break and need some assistance. most of the brands on albert & eddie will also cover the cost for a close relative or friends accommodation to stay with you, if you’re treated as an inpatient during your holiday.
